Event Details

The Global Goals are going to transform our world and that transformation will create exciting opportunities for  all types of businesses located in Scotland (large, SMEs, social enterprises and social firms) to deliver new products and services into new markets, with innovative business models.

After the largest public consultation ever undertaken, the Goals were adopted by the UK and the other 192 Member States of the United Nations in 2015. They call for economic growth, innovation, affordable energy, and upgraded infrastructure - and provide a path to end extreme poverty, fight inequality, and protect the planet. First Minister Nicola Sturgeon commited the Scottish Government to the Goals in July 2015, and subsequent work has been done on mapping the SDGs against the National Performance Framework. These societal challenges are in need of solutions that the private sector and social enterprises can deliver - representing a large and growing market for business innovation.  In the rush to transform business models and systems for the future, integrity and values will have a huge role to play. Finding solutions to societal problems is good business!

Companies, policy makers, academics, NGOs and the public in Scotland need to understand what this important global mega-trend means for Scotland, the business community, and wider civil society - and be aware of the opportunities that commitment to the Goals opens up. An experienced panel of business and civic leaders will set the scene for a lively discussion to answer the following questions:

  • What are the Global Goals. What do they mean for Scotland? What is the Government's plan?
  • How can the Global Goals framework facilitate real change throughout Scotland ?
  • Why should business in Scotland care about the Goals? What opportunities do the Goals offer?
  • How can business in Scotland contribute to achieving the Goals and benefit from doing so?

Participants will be be introduced to an extensive toolbox, including next generation solutions platforms, an online UN Business Action Hub, and resources that will help your organisation to take action to achieve the SDGs.

Glasgow Caledonian is the University for the Common Good.  Our mission is to make a positive difference to the communities we serve and this is at the heart of all we do, especially in our social innovation teaching and research.  Our applied research addresses the SDGs through three major societal challenges, enabling communities in the UK and internationally to build inclusive societies and live healthy lives in sustainable environments.

The UN Global Compact Network UK is the focal point for UK-based signatories of the UN's voluntary corporate citizenship initiative. The UK Network aims to further the Global Compact's 10 principles and the UN's broader development agenda, at the heart of which are the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The UN Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) is a Global Compact initiative, led by business schools and universities. The UK & Ireland PRME Regional Chapter facilitates learning, knowledge exchange and networking amongst its 60 members.
