Governor Induction- Learning as a pathway, not just an event.

Summary

This one day face to face course is part 2 of a comprehensive 3 part year long innovative approach to governor development, exclusively available to Bucks governors.

It builds on initial knowlewdge of governance and develops new governors understanding of how governance works in practice and be confident in your role by working through a real life case study in a one day collaborative workshop

This workshop is suitable for new and not so new governors who have the basics (See below) about what governance is about and now are ready to develop their confidence and depth of knowledge about how to exercise their role in practice.

Lunch and refreshments throughout the day are included.

This course is being offered this term at a minimum charge of £50 per person to cover VAT venue, food and Eventbrite actual costs. All participants will also receive a free copy of the NGA Guide "Welcome to Governance"

There are 30 places on each course and demand will be strong so early booking is advised.

More about the course

Participants will work together through real life Bucks school case studies to develop governor’s confidence and understanding of how to:

  • Prepare for and participate effectively in meetings
  • Ask questions to challenge and support the headteacher and his/her team
  • Understand academic attainment and progress data
  • Understand school financial information and the budgeting process
  • Participate in strategic planning and monitoring of the School development plan
  • Conduct governor visits and write reports
  • Understand Safeguarding in a school context
  • Be prepared for OFSTED
  • Become a valued member of the GB team

At the end of the course governors will

  • Understand how Governing Boards work in practice, including differences between Academies, and MATs
  • Gain confidence to participate and develop their roles fully both during and between meetings.
  • Ask and frame relevant questions to challenge and support
  • Discuss how to resolve tricky issues which typically arise in a safe environment
  • Develop an action plan for future actions and development of their role
  • Join a follow up network for new governors if they wish

The course assumes governors have already gained the basics of governance by:

  • Working through an on-line governor induction course- ( NGA Learning Link or The Key for governors induction programme Modern Governor on line programmes
  • Studying a selection of key governor documents- eg induction documents given to you by your Board , DFE Governance Handbook, Ofsted 2019 framework

Course Tutors

Your tutors for the course will be a team of at least 2 of the 4 National Leaders of Governance (NLGs) working in Bucks, Anne Sheddick, Paul Randall and Lorraine Couves.

NLGs are expert and experienced governors appointed and trained by DfE to develop Governance nationally by supporting Boards, Chairs and LAs in their governance work. They have many years working in Bucks between them and are experienced trainers

Is my registration fee or ticket transferrable?

Yes, but only to another member of your governing board/school or Trust

Can my school book me on this course?

Yes, but they will only be able to do so if your school business manager has access to a school credit card. It is probably simpler to pay with your own card on line and reclaim the fee from your school via governor expenses procedure
