Making Judgements: Marking the Work of Students with Dyslexia
Wed 22 March 2017, 14:00 – 15:00 GMT
What is the best way to approach marking the works of students with dyslexia? Many universities have a policy offering guidance on marking the work of students with dyslexia. These policies are viewed as a reasonable adjustment under the Equality Act 2010, and could potentially offer a way of levelling the playing field for students who struggle with spelling and grammar because of their specific learning difficulty. However, for staff marking work this can raise complex questions about the interplay between language and communication, and disciplinary knowledge construction. This issue engages with many of the challenges relating to developing genuinely inclusive practices.
In this interactive workshop, we will discuss some examples of the different approaches which have been adopted in other universities. The aim will be to identify some practical guidance to support inclusive practices and to help to further develop our own approaches at York St John University.
