About this Event

Making light work: an inaugural lecture by Professor Kate Sugden

Deputy Dean

School of Engineering and Applied Science

Photonic sensing uses light to measure what is happening in the world around us. Building on technology developed for telecommunications and, more recently, consumer technology, such as LED lighting and digital cameras, photonic sensing has evolved significantly in terms of the breadth of applications and deployment cost. This lecture introduces the area of fibre Bragg grating technology, but also explores applications of photonics in laser material processing, optical metrology and laser instruments.
