Event description

Description

Joe Studholme, co-founder of fine-art publisher Editions Alecto and who carried out the printing of Joseph Banks’ Florilegium from the original copper plates between 1980 and 1990, will give a talk on the Making of Banks’ Florilegium, the engravings of the plants collected by Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander on Captain Cook’s first voyage round the world in HMS Endeavour, 1768 – 1771. The talk will describe the Endeavour voyage, Banks’ preparations for the publication of his Florilegium in the eighteenth century and how it came about that the 743 exquisite copper plate line engravings he commissioned, all of plants new to European botany, were first printed and published over two hundred years later in the 1980s. It is a fascinating tale.
