Event description

Description

There is a serious democratic deficit in how the planning system is applied in Midlothian - and throughout Scotland. Community efforts to ensure local developments are appropriate, sustainable and meeting genuine need are routinely ignored by the people we have elected to represent us and by the officers of our local authorities. The Scottish government and our local government are failing local communities every day, by failing to ensure that adequate provision is made for schooling and healthcare and to preserve the identities of our neighbourhoods.

Communities need a better understanding of how the planning system works, to be able to exercise meaningful influence on the process. We need to be aware of the aspects that are within local authority control and those that are dictated by central government. We need to organise to be more effective in seeking change to systems that do not reflect residents' views adequately.

You are invited to join the Midlothian Federation of Community Councils, Planning Democracy (PD) and the Scottish Community Alliance (SCA) at a workshop to explore how the planning system works, learn about the campaign for Equal Right of Appeal for communities and discuss a process and a project whereby we can begin to restore the democratic element to the planning process.

The planned agenda for the workshop is as follows:

  1. Registration + Coffee & Tea
  2. Understanding how the Planning System works - Andy Inch (SCA)
  3. An Introduction to Planning Democracy and the campaign for an Equal Right of Appeal - Clare Symonds (PD)
  4. Break for Lunch (provided)
  5. The Future of Neighbourhood Planning
  6. The Midlothian Project (more detail to follow)
  7. Next Steps

This event has been organised mainly for the benefit of Community Councillors, who deal with these issues every week, but everyone with an interest in making the planning process work better for local communities is welcome to attend. Tickets are limited, so register as soon as possible. We suggest you arrive a little before 10:00 to check in and grab a tea or coffee before the main event begins.
