Event description

Description

In 2015, councils across Northern Ireland gained planning powers over their local areas. Nearly three years later, and the two-tier planning system is now well-established. But for councillors and planning officers, the challenge is to use these powers to improve the health and prosperity of their local areas.

To get the most from their planning powers, councils will need to become place makers. Councillors and planners will need to identify a vision for their local area, then work to realise it.

But with the system still relatively new, questions remain. How can the eleven emerging Local Development Plans be used to promote a placemaking approach? Can places be created by co-design? And how can we ensure that the places we create are fit for the future, as well as the present?

On 30 January 2018, these questions will be addressed at a seminar organised by Eye on the Hill Events in partnership with the Northern Ireland Local Government Association (NILGA). The seminar, the second in the ‘Making Planning Work’ series, is a must-attend for councillors, planners and developers alike. BBC Radio Ulster's Seamus McKee will act as chair, ensuring a constructive discussion. The event will take place in the impressive surroundings of the Baby Grand theatre in Belfast's Grand Opera House. With contributions from senior officials from the Departments for Communities and Infrastructure, a council CEO and experts from across the UK and Ireland, the seminar promises an unique insight into the process of creating thriving places.
