Event description

Description

The training day: This masterclass has much to offer both emerging artists and experienced professionals interested in expanding their practice. It will look at the ideology driving Collective Encounters’ work, the ideas underpinning Theatre for Social Change more widely, and the practical realities of delivering this work in a UK setting. This masterclass will be delivered by Artistic Director, Sarah Thornton.

By the end of the day participants will have an enhanced understanding of:

  • how Collective Encounters makes theatre with communities, in particular, the processes and methodology for both workshop delivery and theatre making

  • the ethical and practical challenges of community arts practice and how these can be overcome

  • how to develop meaningful theatre project with marginalised groups and communities

Save £10 per masterclass when booked with either Arts and Dementia or Managing Arts Projects with Social Impact.

Book onto all three masterclasses for £200 saving £55.

Background and expertise: Over the past 11 years Collective Encounters has refined its approach to Theatre for Social Change and participatory arts to develop a model that combines excellent artistic quality with exemplary ethical practice. Participatory work takes place in a diverse range of settings: from homeless shelters to care homes, from youth clubs to exclusion units, from libraries to town halls; and ranges from short term accredited programmes to long-term initiatives that support participants to bring about meaningful changes in their lives. The company integrates its practice with research to make sure that processes are fully interrogated and that learning from new developments in the field is on-going. This rigorous process has enabled Collective Encounters to develop a unique approach with a clear methodology, rationale and set of processes, which has been very well received at conferences and events in Europe, North America and Australia.
