Making progress with PDA
Overview
So, you've taken on board low demand. You've learnt to back off. You understand that the behaviour of demand avoidance from an Autistic young person is driven by anxiety, meaning that trying to use consequnces or authority as a way to get tasks met or reduce behaviour that presents a challenge will likely make things worse and dysregulate the person more.
You don't get it right all the time but no-one does. Practice makes you better. Nobody's perfect. Ultimately, you understand the priciple. To try not to make demands. So now what?
As parents, it's still our role to try to support our child towards a adult path they can be happy and autonomous in. We still want to be part of their life and choices. To share what we know and our experiences. As professionals, it is our job. Our job is often based on reaching outcomes that show progress.
In this webinar, we will focus on how we can still do that within a framework of a low demand approach. Your host Sam Harris will draw on the approaches he has been supporting families to use since 2013 and the ideas he has developed in direct work with Autistic young people with PDA profile since 2007 and still gets the opportunity to practice on a daily basis.
If you have already adopoted a PDA freindly approach. Learnt as much as you can about low demand [if not, we'd love you to check out the Neurodive Patroen page for recordings of past webinars on low demand to get up to speed]. Know plenty of low demand communication tools. But want to be able to still support progress. This is the webinar for you.
