Event description
Emma explores her research into feelings of'Maternal Ambivalence' and the impact that these feelings can have on Maternal Mental Health.

About this Event

This training is suitable for professionals who work with women who are mothers in a variety of settings.

Suicide is the biggest killer of new mothers in the UK in the first year after birth. In this training Emma will share her research which explores why so many women are finding the transition to motherhood so difficult. She will also discuss the implications of this research, and what we can do as professionals and as a community to make this transition less traumatic for new mothers.

Emma is a counsellor who has published research in this important area after experiencing her own feelings of maternal ambivalence to motherhood. She now works therapeutically with mothers and mothers to be in her private counselling practice.

Aim:

To understand why some women find the transition to motherhood so difficult in order to support them better through this transition.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of the day learners will:

1. Understand what ambivalent feelings towards motherhood might look and sound like.

2. Explore and challenge some of the dominant cultural expectations and stereotypes of motherhood.

3. Recognise how and why some women feel unable to accept their own feelings of ambivalence towards motherhood and the impact that this can have on their mental health.

4. Know what is meant by the term ‘Empowered Motherhood’ and how we might empower the women that we work with to accept their feelings of ambivalence towards motherhood.
