MAKING SENSE OF METACOGNITION

A one-day event for school leaders and classroom teachers

The Education Endowment Foundation says that metacognition and self-regulation techniques (also known as ‘learning to learn’) provide “high impact for very low cost, based on extensive evidence” (Education Endowment Foundation, 2019)

But what does ‘metacognition and self-regulation’ look like in the classroom?

What comes first, metacognition or self-regulation?
And what’s the difference between the two?

Over the last ten years, Dr James Mannion and Kate McAllister have developed a new approach to Learning to Learn, known as the Learning Skills curriculum. An 8-year evaluation carried out at the University of Cambridge found that the Learning Skills curriculum leads to significant gains in subject learning across the curriculum, with accelerated gains among students from disadvantaged backgrounds (Mannion, McAllister and Mercer, 2018).

The Learning Skills curriculum is rooted in three key concepts: metacognition, self-regulation and oracy. In this one-day event for teachers and school leaders, you will learn a range of practical strategies for developing metacognition, self-regulation and oracy in the classroom, including:

  • A range of strategies, habits and routines for promoting metacognition
  • How to teach students to self-regulate their emotions as well as their learning behaviours
  • How to promote metacognitive talk among students and teachers
  • How to build on the insights of ‘cognitive load theory’ to make learning more impactful

Drawing on insights from ‘implementation science’, you will leave this practical workshop with a detailed, personalised action plan for how to put these ideas into action in a way that makes sense to you and your students: which strategies you will use, who you will use them with, and how you will know if they have been successful.

Don’t miss out on this intensive one-day deep dive into metacognition, self-regulation and oracy – an essential tool for any teacher or school leader seeking to help their pupils get better at learning.
