Event description

Description

Organised by The IOP Stimulating Physics Network

Delivered by Lancaster University Physics Department

Supported by The Ogden Trust

Aim:

To give Physics teachers the opportunity to develop their understanding of physics concepts through discussion with Physics researchers. This new knowledge and understanding is then shared with their students while teaching the curriculum in more innovative and exciting ways.

Lancaster University Physics Department has been at the fore front of particle physics research since the 1960’s. This is an event which allows teachers to discuss the concepts of particle physics at all levels which would improve the level of understanding of Physics teachers.

    • The strong nuclear force and exchange particles and the conservation laws will be discussed within the context of the ATLAS experiment at Cern.
    • The weak interaction and the W and Z bosons will be discussed with the context of neutrino research at the T2K experiment in Japan.
    • Hands on projects include measuring the cosmic ray muons, measurement of background radiation using Gamma Ray, Spectroscopy, identification of particles using Cloud Chambers and Bubble Chamber photographs
