Event Details

4-day course, over 2-weekends // 24th+25th February + 4th+5th March // 10am-5pm each day // Level: Beyond Beginner // Instructor: Cassandra Macindoe // Cost: £240 (inc. pattern) + cost of fabrics // Patterns: For Men - Fairfield Shirt - For Women - Archer Shirt or Melilot Shirt or Harrison Shirt

Learn how to make a repeatable, well fitting wardrobe staple: the classic button-up shirt.

In this 4-day, 2-weekend course, Cassandra will be guiding you through the tricky details of making a button-up shirt that fits really well. On the first weekend, students will be creating a toile and making pattern adjustments for best fit (depending on the outcome of this, your toile may be wearable). You will then use these pattern adjustments to create your shirt on the second weekend. And at the end of the course, you'll come away with an adjusted shirt pattern that you can use as often as you like.

As part of this course, Cassandra will be demonstrating a number of techniques, such as setting in sleeves; sewing a collar stand; cuffs & cuff plackets; back yokes; flat felled seams; and buttons & buttonholes. She will also be showing you how to achieve good fit, covering bust adjustments; lengthening & shortening; colour blocking (very exciting!); collar variations; and adjusting sleeves.

Skill Level

This is a Beyond Beginner course, which means that some of the details are a wee bit trickier than what you would find in a beginner garment. Participants should have a certain amount of confidence on the sewing machine, and a good grasp of basic garment making techniques, having made at least 2 garments previously. If you have any doubts about whether you're ready for this course, feel free to contact us.

Outcomes

  • A well fitting button up shirt in your own fabric
  • A shirt pattern, adjusted for your own unique body, which you can use as often as you like
  • A toile, which may be wearable
  • A basic understanding of how to make a wardrobe staple with various styling options.

Pattern Options

There are 4 pattern options available for this course: For Men - Fairfield Shirt - For Women - Archer Shirt or Melilot Shirt or Harrison Shirt (Note that if your bust size is a D or bigger, we recommend choosing the Harrison Shirt in order to avoid extensive alterations. This shirt has been specifically designed for a fuller figure.)
