Making the most of academic opportunities
International mobility brings many advantages to researchers but also presents challenges. This session will help researchers who have come to the UK understand the key features of the academic sector and highlight some of the opportunities which can help to boost your research profile, build your network and prepare for the next steps in your career.
With this enhanced understanding, we will then look at the features of an effective career plan and develop professional development goals for the next year. You will leave with a clearer idea of how to make the most of your time in the UK and a set of personal challenges.
SRUK Scotland (http://www.sruk.org.uk/) organises this workshop to highlight the peculiarities of the academic career in UK to facilitate the integration of new (and older!) PhD students and post-doc in the UK and ensure that they make the most out of their time in the UK, before deciding to continue the careers in the UK or, perhaps, move to a different country.
This workshop is facilitated by Dr Sara Shinton (@sarashinton, www.shintonconsulting.com) who has a background in academic research, careers guidance and academic development. She has helped researchers all over Europe develop their careers, explore options and equip themselves for the challenges of academic life.
