Explore kinetic sculpture and micro-controllers with artist Jen Sykes
About this event
Through the introduction of accessible, physical computing toolkits, it's now easier than ever to add creative control over existing electronic objects. This workshop will introduce you to a range of engaging, practical methods to operate and alter the behaviour of toys, mechanics and found objects.
Participants should bring along a laptop and a battery operated device/toy they want to hack (no mains powered devices!)
If bringing along a laptop is an issue, the lab has some spare laptops that participants may use. Just let us know if you need one in advance.
About Jen Sykes
Jen Sykes is a visual-artist based in Glasgow. Having graduated from the MFA in Computational Arts at Goldsmiths University of London in 2012, her work spans creative computing, sculpture and electronic hardware designs often connecting the physical analog and digital worlds. Her research focuses on using computer related materials to narrate qualities which normally lay dormant, invisible to the human eye. Her research has led her to develop her own circuits and hardware as well as frequently been commissioned to fabricate sensors and interactives for other artists and designers. Alongside her practice Jen has lectured in Interactive Prototyping at the Glasgow School of Art for the past three years and taught at the Glasgow Sculpture Studios for two years. Recent work and commissions include the BBC, Glasgow International Visual Art Festival and the NeuralIPS Art AI exhibition.
