Event description

Description

Overview

This workshop will be delivered by members of the Makers Guild in Wales, who are expert in teaching the skills needed for making with fibre. The day will have a weaving focus, and show how beautiful pieces can be created using a simple technique of warp and weft thread around a range of objects that act as 'looms', such as pieces of driftwood, pebbles or a box. You will experiment with different materials such as yarn (natural and synthetic), twigs, foil, plastic bags, recycled fabrics.

Cross-curricular links:

  • Science – understanding the different properties of materials including their flexibility, strength, colour and texture.

  • Numeracy – quantity of warp/weft threads, repeat patterns, problem solving, weights and measures

  • History – the history of weaving, basketry within Wales, cultural identity, poetry ('weaving' of words - story telling), warp, weft, texture, loom, synthetic, recycled etc.

This workshop will benefit teachers and teaching assistants who want to enhance their hand making skills and knowledge of working with fibre, in order to offer their pupils’ high quality making projects.
