Malawi Gala Night in Scotland 2017
Sat, 8 Jul 2017, 18:00 – Sun, 9 Jul 2017, 01:00 BST
Association of Malawians in Scotland (AMS) would like to conduct a fundraising event whose proceeds will be dedicated to Chichiri and Chikwawa Prisons in Malawi. It is hoped that the funds will go a long way to assist mothers (children) incarcerated in these two prisons. To achieve this, AMS needs your financial help to organise this event.
Most women in prison are mothers. The imprisonment of a woman who is a mother can lead to the violation not only of her rights but also the rights of her children. When a mother is imprisoned, her baby and/or young children may go into prison with her or be separated from her and left on the ‘outside’. Both situations can put the child at risk. Prisons are not a safe place for pregnant women, babies and young children and it is not advisable to separate babies and young children from their mother.
Children of imprisoned mothers are the most vulnerable and at risk. Despite law provisions governing operation of prisons, children in most Malawi Prisons face huge challenges for the crimes they have not committed.
It has been observed that to successfully assist children’s living conditions in prisons while living with their mothers, measures need to be put in place to improve living conditions of their mothers.
