About this event
THE DATES SHOWN ARE PROVISIONAL ONLY AND MAY CHANGE WITHOUT WARNING.
The course
This is a 2-3 day archery "beginners' course", designed to train complete beginners to shoot a bow & arrow safely & competently. Everything you need will be provided - please do not buy any archery equipment before completing the course.
You will be trained on 'recurve' bows (as in the illustration), but you will be introduced to barebow, longbow & compound bowstyles during the course.
The course is intensive, and requires candidates to focus for an extended period.
Malvern Archers have been supporting archers for more than 100 years. The course will be run by our ArcheryGB licensed coaches - who are all DBS checked & SafeGuarding trained. Please note that U18 candidates must be accompanied by an adult for the duration of the course.
The format for this course is two 4.5 hour sessions on the Saturday & Sunday afternoons of that weekend. This will cover all you need to know to become a safe & effective archer. There will be a third 2.5 hour session during the week following, on a club night (optionally on Tuesday or Thursday evening). This will cover issuing your novices' archery equipment, details of club life and other information specific to our club.
The Venue
The venue is the outdoor shooting field for Malvern Archers. It is fully equipped as an archery range. It has a toilet & Manor Park has full clubhouse facilities. There is on-site parking & all required areas are wheelchair accessible.
There will be comfort breaks mid-session in the clubhouse.
Costs
The cost is £80 per person. You can:
- Pay in full now.
- Pay a £20 non-refundable deposit to secure your place on the course. The balance of £60 will be billed separately, and payment is expected (at the latest) 4 weeks prior to starting the course.
Equipment
All the archery equipment you need to complete the course will be provided. Please do not buy any archery equipment before completing the course! If you join our club after completing the course you will have the opportunity to hire from us suitable equipment for a few weeks. This enables you to gain strength, technique & knowledge, so that when the times comes you can make a better choice of your first kit.
Going forward
We hope that you enjoy your course & decide to take up the sport. Completing the course will enable you to join any ArcheryGB affiliated archery club (subject to that club's rules & policies). At the end of the course our staff will discuss with you how to move forward. Malvern Archers have a very proactive approach to supporting new archers coming to us, as well as ongoing development once you are established.
Cancellation policy
We appreciate that circumstances change, sometimes quite dramatically. Accordingly we have in place the following refunds policy.
- All requests for refunds must be approved by the club's executive committee - it cannot be sanctioned by the course organiser alone.
- The deposit (or equivalent part of the full fee) is NOT refundable, and is only applicable to the course booked.
- Cancellations requested more than 28 days before the start of the course will be offered a refund of fees paid in excess of the deposit or a "roll-over" to our next course (see below).
- Cancellations requested between 14 and 28 days before the start of the course will be offered a 50% refund of the fee or a "roll-over" to our next course (see below).
- Cancellations requested between 7 and 14 days before the start of the course will be offered only a "roll-over" to our next course (see below).
- Within 7 days of the start of the course no refunds or roll-overs will be offered.
- Roll-overs will only be available if there is space on our next course. Candidates who elect to "roll over" their booking will be required to purchase a fresh "Deposit Only" place on the new course. The balance of their fees will then be transferred (internally) to the new course.
- Each application will be considered on its merits.
Frequently asked questions
Yes, we do not accept those under 8. Although there are many successful juniors in archery, those in the age range 8-12 may be so physically small that they do not get adequate 'cast' on the bow and therefore struggle to shoot successfully.
Not really. As long as you are fit enough to hold the bow steady then archery is eminently suitable for older people. Indeed most of our most proficient archers are 50+, and remain competitive into their 60s.
Archery is uniquely suitable for disabled people, whether those disabilities are mental or physical or both. Malvern Archers can support archers with a wide range of disabilities - although there are some that require highly specialised support, and we would refer those to a specialist club.
That depends. If you were, at some point, a proficient archer then we do a 'return to archery' scheme (see our main website). If you have just had an hour or so as an 'experience', then yes - you should attend this course.
The main body of the course will be delivered in two sessions, on the afternoons of the Saturday and following Sunday. The third session is optional (for people interested in joining the sport) will be arranged for a normal club sessions shortly thereafter.
