Event description

About this Event

Miriam Makeba is one of the biggest names in world music, transcending her South African roots to become a global star and icon of political courage. Working across genres including Afropop, traditional African melodies, western popular music and jazz, Makeba - Mama Africa - blazed a trail for African performers around the world. Exiled from SA for appearing in Come Back Africa, a film opposing the apartheid regime that took top prize at the Venice Film Festival, she became increasingly vocal against racist structures while based in the United States, later Guinea and Belgium. Her peers and collaborators included Harry Belafonte, Dizzy Gillespie and Nina Simone, to name but a few. This engrossing film features select archive material of performances and interviews from Makeba, Belafonte, Nelson Mandela, Paul Simon and many more.
