Description

This study session is aimed at nurses who are experienced in the management of leg ulceration and are competent in compression bandaging. This session will build from these skills to enable you to assess and manage patients with chronic Oedema.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the session you will have a good understanding of:

  • Signs/symptoms of Chronic Oedema including prevalence, aetiology and pathophysiology.

  • Disease progression and lymphoedema.

  • The importance of holistic assessment and differential diagnosis.

  • How and when to refer to specialist services.

  • Management of chronic oedema including skin care, exercise and compression therapy.

  • Management of chronic oedema (leaky legs)

  • Management of chronic oedema in heart/renal failure.

  • Practical application of inelastic multi-layer compression bandaging for chronic oedema.

  • Practical guidance for measuring and fitting hosiery including the differences between British and European standards, circular and flat knit hosiery.
