Description

This course provides you with the basic understanding of sleep physiology, the impact of sleep disorders on the child and family and a rapid guide to core sleep disorders. Building on this you will focus on sleep disorders in vulnerable populations including children with physical and learning disabilities, ADHD, anxiety disorders and epilepsy.

From this core knowledge platform you will learn management approaches to chronic insomnia in childhood and practice assessing a real clinical case. The course is interactive and uses a rich set of filmed case study material throughout. All material is taught by our NHS team and is grounded in best evidence and extensive clinical experience.


Who is the course suitable for?
All professionals who regularly work with children who have sleep problems, and work for a statutory organisation, for example:

  • Paediatricians
  • Clinical psychologists
  • Psychiatrists
  • Health visitors
  • Learning disability nurses
  • Occupational therapists
  • Nursery nurses


Course aims and learning outcomes
This course aims to help you understand:

  • the role of sleep in healthy child development
  • the nature of sleep problems in children including those with disabilities
  • the management principles of key sleep disorders and when to seek specialist support.


By the end of this course you should be able to:

  • identify sleep disorders that may contribute to sleep problems in children, namely: behavioural insomnia, parasomnias, circadian rhythm disorders, pathological excessive daytime sleepiness, movement disorders, psychological causes of insomnia and sleep disordered breathing
  • create and supervise the implementation of a sleep management programme addressing behavioural insomnia within your new role.
  • know when a child with a sleep disorder should be referred to a specialist sleep service.


On completion of the course you will receive PIER certification.

This course has Royal College of Nursing (RCN) accreditation
