Event description

Description

We will focus on coppice management and the day will also include opportunities to discuss ecology of ancient semi-natural woodlands, past and present management and how to best manage in the future in the face of climate change and new pests and diseases. There will inevitably be a discussion on ash dieback and how it could affect woodland in the Lake District. There are dormouse nest boxes in the wood, so we can check some of these – there are no dormice recorded yet but the boxes may hold other small mammals. If the weather is OK, we can open a moth trap in the morning.

MEETING PLACE: At the entrance to Sales Bank Wood on Bessie Bank Lane; you will be directed to park up the lane if the woodland parking is full. Post code for sat. nav. is LA12 8HP (but please don’t end up at Hill Park Farm).

DIRECTIONS: From the south, take the A590 towards Barrow –in–Furness. Approx. 16.5 miles after the Brettargh Holt junction near Kendal, turn right onto the A 5092 at Greenodd. After half a mile turn right in Penny Bridge and go over the bridge. Continue 2.5 miles to Colton and take the left turn to Bandrake Head. Follow this lane to the hamlet, turn sharp left up the steep bank and then go down the dip and over the beck, around a couple of bends, up the hill and the woodland gateway is on the left about 0.8 of a mile from the turn to Bandrake Head. From Ulverston, go to Greenodd and follow the same directions. From the north the best route is past Grizedale Forest, going south to Oxen Park and then follow the same directions from Bandrake Head. OS grid ref: SD 309 870.

We will be outdoors all day; no facilities; we can be under a tarpaulin if it's wet. Please bring a packed lunch. We can light a stove to heat food and provide hot water. There is no on-site café and the nearest Starbucks is in Preston!
