Background and context

NEWS2 was launched by the Royal College of Physicians in 2017 and is endorsed by NHS Improvement, NHS England and the National Quality Board.

It is a validated tool to support early recognition and identification of physical deterioration and the standardisation of communication at the interface of care in acute and ambulance care settings.

NHS England has asked all acute and ambulance trusts to use NEWS2 by March 2019 as part of the approach to managing sepsis and all causes of deterioration. In support of this we have been actively engaged in a joint programme of work to accelerate the adoption and use of NEWS2.

There has been good progress made nationally with a growing interest in extending the use of NEWS2 in non-acute care settings such as GP practices, out-of-hours services, community trusts, district nursing, mental health, prisons, and care/nursing homes. Work is also underway to build a consensus for Paediatric EWS (PEWS) along with a growing interest in EWS in maternity (MEWS). We have an opportunity to accelerate the pace of development, with the potential to save many lives.
