Event Details

Most people are apprehensive when faced with having the difficult, challenging conversation. This includes conversations in which we have to deliver unpleasant news, discuss a delicate subject, or talk about something that needs to change or has gone wrong. People may be fearful that the conversation will precipitate bad feeling and conflict and may want to avoid having them altogether. The problem with avoidance is that, in the absence of a situation resolving on its own, putting it off only allows it to continue and potentially get worse. Planning and preparation can help deal with apprehension and make it much more likely that the difficult conversations you need to have will be successful.

Who can apply?

For anyone who wants to improve their overall effectiveness in having difficult and honest conversations. This one-day course will be particularly helpful for those in people management roles or where challenging conversations form an aspect of your work.

  • Analysing the types of difficult conversations in the workplace and the reasons to have them.
  • Exploring the options for action and the potential outcomes.
  • Planning and preparing for successful conversations.
  • Creating a conducive environment for open honest discussions.
  • Questions to uncover facts, thoughts and feelings.
  • Listening with the intent to understand.
  • Dealing effectively with fight and flight behaviours in ourselves and others.
  • Using positive language to drive and maintain meaningful dialogue.
  • Identifying the way forward and follow up activity.

Carrie Stockton

Facilitator Bio

Carrie is an executive coach, facilitator and HR consultant. Her extensive experience spans over 20 years where she has worked closely with a number of leadership teams across a diverse range of industry sectors in Europe, North America and Australasia. Her approach is both creative and pragmatic, with a strong focus on results. She is used to working on challenging projects, not only managing various stakeholders, but also using her mix of intuition, enthusiasm and experience to drive significant change.

She is warm and engaging and her ability to build relationships with her clients and her team is exceptional. She trained as an executive coach at Ashridge Business School, is a Fellow of the CIPD and tutors for them on their open programmes. She is qualified in a wide range of assessment and profiling tools and also has a diploma in personal impact coaching.
