This session is tailored for personal tutors and other academic colleagues in higher education. This live online event will explore practical ways for you to respond confidently when supporting distressed students, including students at higher levels of risk.

Through this session, you will:

  1. Explore the nature of distress
  2. Understand key practical ways to maintain the boundaries of our academic roles when working with students
  3. Consider practical ways to build a collaborative relationship with a student who is distressed
  4. Know what to do when you're aware of a student who is presenting a high level of risk

Group discount: If you would like to book 4 or more places on this session for your team, you are welcome to contact us at info@plinthhouse.com and we can offer you a discounted rate.

This course has been devised by:

  • Levi Pay - an experienced director of student services, who has worked at the University of Leeds, Northumbria University and King's College London, and is currently director of the higher education training and consultancy company, Plinth House.
  • Julie Rea - a registered mental health nurse with 20 years' experience of managing mental health services in both higher education and the NHS. Julie now works as a specialist trainer and consultant, supporting universities and other organisations to enhance mental health support.

We will be using an online webinar system called GoToWebinar. Full instructions on how to access the webinar will be emailed to you after you register.

We look forward to you registering and joining us at this session.

FAQs

What hardware/software will I need to access the session?

We are using the GoToWebinar platform to deliver this session. GoToWebinar works on many different devices and in a wide range of browsers.

If you want to access the event via your browser, the Google Chrome browser on a laptop or desktop computer is recommended.

For the best experience, we recommend downloading the GoToWebinar software. There is no need to wait until the event starts to do this. Visit https://support.logmeininc.com/gotowebinar/av-get-ready to test your system and download the GoToWebinar software, so you are all ready.

Will I need to spend some time setting things up before the event?

The event will start at 2pm (BST). We strongly recommend you join a few minutes before the start time to set things up and check your headphones/speakers are working.

You’ll be able to get into the waiting area for the event 10 minutes before the start time, using your personal unique link.

Will I be able to access the material after the session?

We have put together a handout containing the key information that we cover during the webinar and some additional information. We'll explain how to download this handout at the start of the webinar. Therefore, although a recording of the session will not be available after the session, you will have a reminder of all of the key points.
