Event description

Description

The effective management of sickness absence in schools can often present a challenge for Headteachers, School Leaders and Business Managers. Getting it right can prove to be tricky.

Presented by Ruth Rule Mullen, Employment Law Solicitor and Dave Hewitt, HR Consultant, this free twilight briefing looks at good practice but at the same time, examines some of the procedural and legal pitfalls and recent caselaw, that employers should be aware of.

Some of the topics to be covered are;

  • repeated short term and long term absence management. Best approaches.
  • the Equality Act, the broad definition of ‘disability’, the duty to make reasonable adjustments and how this impacts on absence management procedures.
  • fit for work...or not? How does an employer decide? Occupational Health advice versus GP advice
  • managing stress related absence and reducing the risk of litigation under Health and Safety law
  • being able to show the impact of absence on a school’s operation and business
  • handling confidential medical information and employer responsibilities, under the forthcoming General Data Protection Regulations
  • granting leave of absence - the statutory entitlements as well as the discretions open to employers

Following the presentation, there will be an opportunity for questions and answers

Registration and coffee is from 3.45 ready for a 4.15 start. Please click here for Directions to the venue.
