Event description

Description

Managing GDPR in the academic research sector

Intended audience

This event will be relevant for:

  • MRC/university/other academic Research Governance leads/managers
  • University/MRC/other academic Data Protection Officers

It will not be relevant for individual researchers, members of Research Ethics Committees or NHS managers. If you are in the NHS, we know that the NHS R&D Forum will cover GDPR in their 2018 conference, for more details please see: http://www.annualrdforum.org.uk/.

Main objectives

To give a brief introduction to the new data protection legislation (General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and new Data Protection Bill/Act). In particular, we will cover the legal provisions covering the processing of personal data to support research. (The day will not be a training session on the detailed content of the new legislation – for more information please see HRA briefing documents).

To introduce attendees to relevant, authoritative guidance and to scope out areas requiring further guidance.

To discuss the practical impact on the day-to-day work of Research Governance and Data Protection functions within academic organisations. In particular we will all be discussing:

How can Research Governance functions and Data Protection Officers within academic organisations work effectively together to ensure compliance with the new legislation, for example around transparency?

How is the academic research community going to attribute relevant accountabilities under the new legislation? In collaborative research, who should be the Data Controller and who are the Data Processors?

Is there a need to revisit Data Sharing agreements in light of the new legislation? This might include limiting identifiability of data shared and agreeing on responsibilities.

Some prior knowledge of the vocabulary used in data protection and confidentiality law may be useful. Some pre-attendance reading you might find useful are our GDPR Guidance Notes (available from ‘News’ on www.mrc.ac.uk/regulatorysupportcentre). However, do not be anxious if it all feels very new, we are all learning together.

What to expect on the day

The day will be comprised of a series of short presentations (including Information Commissioners Office, Heath Research Authority and NHS Digital) and 3 workshops. The workshops are designed to allow networking, the identification of good practice and provide space to consider impact on the academic research sector. There will be time to ask questions. All attendees will be provided with information packs (including copies of presentations, workshop questions and directions of where to find help).
