No one goes to work with the intention of causing harm. Excellent clinical skills and clinical knowledge are necessary, but not sufficient, to deliver high levels of patient safety in a complex clinical environment. Managing Human Factors is an ethical responsibility rather than a bureaucratic activity. With informed insight and a degree of diligence we can reduce the likelihood of safety failures.

Aims and outcomes:

To gain an understanding of what we mean by 'Human Factors' and how they arise.
To appreciate the impact of vulnerabilities in the way in which we interpret our environment and generate situation awareness.
To explore strategies for gaining access to information, managing cognitive biases and using the insight of the team to manage safety.
To understand the impact of relationships and team dynamics on the flow of information around the team and strategies to manage this.

The morning will be hosted by MDDUS and delivery will include a mix of presentations and whole/small group discussion.

SPEAKERS:

Captain Phil Higton, Director of Training - MBA, FRAeS. Phil has been a commercial pilot for 34 years with British Airways and as part of Terema for the last ten years has extensive experience in transferring learning between his former and current worlds. He has extensive experience in developing and delivering training programmes to address Human Factors and Personal Development needs as well as those of technical competence. He is Director of Training for Terema and has been responsible for the preparation and delivery of programmes for more than 18000 Health care professionals. In the training role he is engaged in projects with both primary and acute healthcare all over the United Kingdom and works with the whole range of employees within these organisations.

Dr Rachel Broadley, Consultant Anesthetist - B.Sc. (Hons), MB BS, FRCA. Rachel qualified from Imperial College School of Medicine in 2000 and has been a Consultant Anaesthetist since 2011. During the course of her training, Rachel has worked in a number of specialities in addition to Anaesthesia, including General and Emergency Medicine, Intensive Care (adult and paediatric) and Hyperbaric/Diving Medicine. In addition to her clinical practice, Rachel has a keen interest in the application of Human Factors in routine medical and surgical practice. This includes the effective application of Checklists and National Safety Standards for Invasive Procedures into regular use at a local and team level. She also brings this experience in to incident investigation from analysis of ‘near miss’ events through to Root Cause Analysis investigation of Serious Untoward Incidents and Never Events. Rachel has been engaged with teaching and training throughout her career but has been involved directly in Patient Safety education since 2009 and the Terema Team Resource Management training since 2015.
