People are the key to any effective humanitarian response. Managing people can be difficult at the best of times, but during the chaos and stress of a complex humanitarian emergency, the ability to manage people is crucial for the success of any programme.

This two-day course introduces participants to the fundamentals of good people management. Participants will have the opportunity to explore theories and practices of good management and will learn how to employ different techniques of communication, negotiation, team building and conflict management in order to develop a concrete set of management skills.

Participants will have an opportunity to reflect on their own style, strengths and weaknesses as a manager in light of their new knowledge and skills. Upon completion, participants will be able to demonstrate several essential skills for managing their teams with greater confidence and success.

  • Improve team performance through effective coaching and feedback

  • Demonstrate how to negotiate to achieve a WIN-WIN outcome and how to resolve conflict

  • Identify personal strengths and weaknesses in relation to managing in emergencies and draw up action points for further learning and development to improve your management style

Who should attend?

This course is aimed at humanitarian personnel responsible for managing others, and is best suited for participants who are new to managerial roles or have management experience, but without any formal training. Participants should be interested in exploring management theory and accessing new tools and techniques to fulfill their management role successfully.

Course structure:

Registration will take place from 8.45 am the Monday morning. The course will run from 9 am and conclude at 5.30 pm daily. Each day is broken up into four sessions, separated by an hour lunch break and coffee/ tea breaks in the morning and afternoon. From the second day, each day begins with a review of the topics covered the previous day to ensure that the concepts, tools, and frameworks are fully understood. Every day ends with a period of reflection, evaluation, and questions.

Participants will be actively encouraged to engage in classroom discussions, group work and a desk based simulation. The trainers will draw on both theoretical and practical knowledge in order to make the experience and learning applicable to the realities of humanitarian practice.

Day 1

The day will begin with a consideration of the role of the manager and of human resources in humanitarian contexts. In the second and third sessions you will consider interpersonal communication skills and negotiation skills, before receiving an introduction to performance management in the final session of the day.

Day 2

On day two you will spend the first session looking at feedback and effective ways to deliver it. The rest of the morning will consider teamwork including how to build and support effective teams. After lunch a session on leadership is followed by the final session on managing conflict.

What does the course fee include?

The course fee includes training delivery for the 2 days, along with a printed workbook. It includes tea/coffee and lunch from Thursday morining until the course end on Friday afternoon.

This course is non-residential. All accommodation and travel needs are the responsibility of the training participant, and not included in the course price.

The course is delivered in English. To fully engage in this course, all participants sould have a good grasp of written and spoken English.

What's the refund policy?

-For bookings cancelled two or more weeks before a course, administrative charges will apply. Applicants will be entitled to a refund of 85% of the course fees paid, or if places are available will be offered a transfer of 90% of the course fees paid onto the next instance of the course.
-For bookings cancelled one to ten working days* before a course begins, 25% of the course fee will be refunded (*during normal UK working days, Monday-Friday and working hours 9am-5pm).
-For bookings cancelled less than 24 hours (working days only) before a course, or after a course has started, no refund will provided.
-If the applicant chooses to transfer to another course and then cancels their booking a second time, neither a further transfer nor a refund will be offered.
-The refund must be claimed within two months from the cancelled course start date.
-Please note that unfortunately we are only able to cover our local bank charges and not the recipient’s bank charges when we make refunds.
-Refunds may take up to 30 days.
