Event description
This course combines identification of photographic processes with requirements for managing prints and negatives as archives.

About this Event

Managing Photographs in the Archives is the popular course developed by Margaret Crockett and Janet Foster, Directors of the Archive-Skills Consultancy, in association with Dr Jessamy Harvey. In response to the Covid 19 pandemic the course has been adapted for online delivery via Zoom. It combines an introduction to the range of photographic techniques and the identification of the resulting photographic prints and negatives with the requirements for managing and preserving them as archival material. It begins with a facilitated discussion about photographs in the archives, the forms they take, their historical value and how they relate to other kinds of archives. Subsequent sessions cover the characteristics of different photographic images and the processes which created them, the environmental conditions and packaging needed for preservation, copyright considerations, how to catalogue photographs and plan digitisation projects.

The course trainers will still be able to illustrate presentations with examples from case studies, sample photographs and packaging. UK participants are recommended to take out on loan one of the photograph packs which have been specially curated for the Zoom version of the course. There will be a small refundable charge for this. Please note that we are unable to post these packs outside the UK. We can provide a specification for the photographic processes represented in the pack so those wishing to participate will be able to source these locally. Participants will also need a Carson’s pocket microscope (60-120X led) and a loupe in order to benefit fully from the identification exercise. The combination of presentations, facilitated discussion and exercises will ensure an interesting and relaxed learning environment. It is a participative development opportunity suitable for a range of archive and records management staff, including those who are new to the area and those who wish to update their skills.

The course fee includes a PDF of the course handbook with supporting notes and useful sources for further information. There is also a course workbook which provides all the information for completing the exercises on the day. Anyone registered for the course will need to have the Zoom App. The link to the Zoom session, together with a secure link to download the handbook and other handouts, will be sent to participants via email two days before the course.
