Event description

Description

Last year employees took 70 million days off for stress, depression and anxiety, costing UK businesses between £70 to 100 billion. This figure could be considerably higher for those employers who were taken to an employment tribunal and had an award made against them. So what steps can employers take? This seminar will provide you with information and tips for (a) avoiding employee absence and (b) managing absence in employee’s suffering from poor mental health.

About the author:

Samira Cakali is a pragmatic and approachable solicitor advocate with extensive contentious and non-contentious experience in the fields of employment law and civil litigation, within a range of commercial businesses from SME’s to multinationals as well as senior executives. She has a particular interest in discrimination and mental health and is an accredited Mental Health First Aider.

She founded the firm in Leeds in 2011 because she wanted to provide clients with high quality legal advice, on time, on budget and in a personal and supportive manner. The experience she gained in both a national and regional law practice enables her to do just that!

Samira is quick to grasp complex legal issues, including complex unfair dismissal, whistle blowing and discrimination claims and this has led to her client’s describing her advocacy skills as being “invaluable for a pain free victorious day in court”.

Her communication skills are further enhanced by her linguistic skills; she speaks fluent Urdu, French and is currently learning Turkish.

To those involved in HR and line management she says: “running my own legal practice enables me to understand the complex nature of managing employer-employee relationships. So, I will take the time to understand your concerns and issues and will not just give you a stock, textbook answer. Additionally, I am a Mental Health First Aider, and thus can offer an invaluable service training management how to effectively deal with an employee with a mental health condition.”

Samira has been named as a top 175 solicitor for the third year running and is a member of the Leeds Law Society, Employment Lawyers Association (ELA) and Yorkshire and Humber Tribunal Users Group.

In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her husband and two young children and, when time permits, running. She successfully completed the London Marathon in 2007 raising over £1,700 for 'Get Kids Going' and regularly participates in the 'Race for Life' and local Half Marathons.
