It is my absolute pleasure to invite you to join Rev. Toby Baxter and ROC for the Manchester COACH Launch lunch in order to present to you the successful COACH ministry.
COACH stands for Creating Opportunities And Casting Hope and is a simple but proven way that Christians can mentor people doing it tough in their communities. A mentor is defined as a "friend with purpose" who goes out from the local church to support a family or young person, offering mentoring towards life goals. Mentors are rigorously screened and receive 14 hours of initial training as well as ongoing support from a local church-based COACH coordinator.
COACH has been evaluated by Monash University (Australia) on two occasions and has multiple endorsements from people who have seen it work, including Tim Costello (CEO World Vision), politicians and church leaders. For example, Rev Canon Andrew Wingfield Digby from St Andrew's Church, Oxford stated:
"Over 12 years ago, St Andrew's Church in North Oxford responded to an opportunity to provide Christian detached youth work in a local council estate which had suffered years of economic, social and spiritual deprivation. That initiative has now led to thriving youth work on the estate and an embryonic missional community meeting in the local Community Centre. A key component in pioneering the work was the COACH Programme. COACH works!"
Some of the UK churches and charities currently using the COACH Programme, in addition to us at ROC, include:
•Holy Trinity Brompton (HTB)
•St Michael’s Southfields
•East Midlands Christian Fellowship (EMCF)
Across England, COACH supports 100 mentors benefiting dozens of families, young people and children. It originated in Australia where it partners with over 50 partner churches and supports 650 approved mentors. It has been a catalyst for many people coming to faith as well as the establishment of six missional communities. 63%% of families who graduate connect with a new faith community as a result of COACH. Also over 80% achieve a significant life goal such as finding a job after 12 months.
Toby has been involved in COACH since its inception in 2003 and would love to chat more about it over lunch.
