Event description

Description

On 23rd June 2018, Manchester Girl Geeks will be holding our 5th all-day BarCamp event!

A BarCamp (cheeky hashtag: #bracamp) is a conference organised without planning any talks ahead of time – so all the talks are given by attendees who sign up on the day (sometimes even halfway through the day!) and topics can be anything – coding, tech, science, making, games, and anything you’re passionate about. It’s like one of our Show & Tell tea parties, but it lasts all day and there’s a choice of talks across three different rooms. Previous BarCamp events run by MGG in 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 have attracted over 400 attendees.

For more information, go to manchestergirlgeeks.com/barcamp, or email us at info@manchestergirlgeeks.com if you have further questions.

Ticketing

Tickets are now on general release! If you previously signed up to the waitlist but missed your chance to claim your ticket, there's still time to grab a ticket if you're quick!

Tickets are free and include lunch, and tickets also including a MGG/BarCamp t-shirt are available for £5. Due to past issues with people registering and not turning up, we always end up with leftover t-shirts so we’re not providing them free to everyone, but at a small cost to encourage turning up to collect them. If you change your mind and want a tshirt on the day, they will be available to buy on the door.

Venue Information

AutoTrader offices

The venue, AutoTrader’s offices are at Number One First Street. The address of the building is on Tony Wilson Place, although the entrance isn’t on the main road. If you go to HOME, the theatre/cinema/restaurant complex that’s at the corner of Whitworth Street West, the entrance to the building is directly opposite through a revolving and accessible door.

The venue is fully wheelchair accessible, and has accessible toilets and a shower (which you probably won’t need to use). There are power sockets in the walls and floor of all the talk rooms, and wifi is available throughout the venue.

We’ll be running our plenaries and keynotes in a big room, and talks will run across four spaces – the big room, two medium sized rooms, and one small room for discussion type sessions. We’ll also have a quiet space available for people to get away from the conference if needed, and a central area with tea/coffee available.

The Day

Wall of talk cards

We’ll be open from 9.30am with tea, coffee and breakfast snacks, and the opening plenary will begin at 10am (don’t be late!). There’ll be 9 talk sessions across four rooms, a comedy keynote from a special guest, and a closing plenary that finishes at 5pm.

Once you arrive, you’ll need to give your name at the desk so we can tick you off our list, then head up to the fifth floor in the lift. Stairs are also available. Once inside you’ll get a lanyard, a BarCamp goodie bag, and your t-shirt if you’ve bought one.

We’ll have a wall of talks, where you can suggest a talk you’d like to give in one of our rooms/time slots, and there’ll be time at the start of the day, after the opening plenary, to put your talk on the board. Before the opening plenary, we’ll be giving priority to anyone who’s never spoken at a BarCamp before, so if that’s you, come and find us on arrival to put your talk on the board.

During the day, free movement between sessions and talks is allowed and encouraged – speakers won’t be offended if you leave or arrive in the middle, as they know there will be other cool stuff going on you might want to go and see! We’ll also have a sponsor/community area with fun activities to check out if none of the talks take your fancy, and during the breaks.

We’ll have a coffee break in the morning, lunch, and another coffee break in the afternoon, and talk slots will be 20 minutes each – but you don’t need to talk for the whole 20 minutes, as Q&A usually happens after and can be even better!

We're going to be joined for our closing keynote by comedian Bec Hill, who will finish the day with some of her award-winning stand-up comedy. Originally from Australia, Bec lives in London and has gained a cult following for her unique and nerdy style. Her work includes guest spots on numerous TV and radio shows including Dara O'Briain's Go 8 Bit, as well as writing, acting, presenting and directing for TV, radio and film, and appearing as a voice actor in PS4 game Mass Effect: Andromeda. She's won a number of awards for her jokes and performances, and is known for incorporating arts and crafts into her stand-up routines.

Food and Drink

We’ll be providing tea, coffee, squash and water all day, as well as a table of cakes from our bake-off, which will be available for general consumption from the first coffee break onwards (once the judge has had chance to make a decision).

Lunch will be provided, and all the food will be vegetarian/vegan – so it’ll all be meat-free and halal, and at least one gluten-free option and one non-spicy option will be available. AutoTrader are also happy for you to bring your own lunch, if you’re not sure you’ll be able to eat anything we’re providing.

Care Labels

We’ll be using GG regular Zoe Breen’s Care Labels for Humans at BarCamp, as a way for attendees to identify themselves and their interests/preferences easily to others. We hope it’ll be useful to attendees, but will be entirely optional. You’ll receive your Care Labels on arrival, and during the post-plenary talk-submitting phase, there’ll be materials and space set aside for you to personalise your Care Labels for the day.

As with all our events, you don't have to be a girl to attend, people of any gender are welcome. People under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
