Manchester, Oldham and Lancashire Portraits

Welcome to Manchester, Oldham and Lancashire Portraits! An illustrated presentation given by author Brian Groom.

Join us on October 11, 2025 at 2:00 PM for a zoom only online event showcasing the rich history and culture of these regions. Whether you're a history buff or just interested in local heritage, this event is for you. With captivating stories and visuals that bring these areas to life, it is an opportunity to explore the past and present of Manchester, Oldham, and Lancashire.

The stories of 20 key people who built the region’s history will be told by Brian Groom, author of bestselling 'Northerners: A History' and 'Made in Manchester: a People's History of the City that Shaped the Modern World'. This includes figures from in or around Oldham such as William Walton, Annie Kenney and J.R. Clynes, plus others from the first Roman soldiers to Samuel Crompton, L.S. Lowry, Elizabeth Gaskell, Gracie Fields, Alan Turing and Victoria Wood.

PLEASE NOTE CHANGE : This was to have been a hybrid meeting but, owing to unforeseen circumstances it will be Zoom only, online.

A meeting reminder email will be send out 3 or 4 days before the talk; a zoom meeting link on Friday morning 10th of October. Registration closes at 12 noon on the 11th. A final reminder and link will be sent at 12 noon, on the meeting day. Login will be from 1:45, for an informal 'meet and greet' of old friends and a welcome to new visitors to our meetings. All are welcome and we hope you will enjoy the meeting and join us again in the future.
