Event description

Description

‘MANCHESTER RENTERS FORUM’

Thursday, 1st March 2018 at The Mechanics Institute.

Food and refreshments will be provided.

Childcare will be available at the event for parents who want to attend.

Housing issues in Manchester have never been more pressing, particuarly for those who live in privately rented accomodation.

What is the Renters Forum?

The Renters Forum is a new initiative hosted and organised by a coalition of housing campaign groups. It seeks to amplify and bring together the voices of people living in or struggling to access private rented housing. It will be an opportunity for renters to come together to share their experiences of renting in Manchester and discuss what needs to change to improve housing in the city.

We need to shift the power imbalance and create a more positive dialogue and greater cooperation between renters, landlords, support services and councils. Together we can demand for better housing locally whilst placing pressure on central government to recognise that everyone has a right to a home that is safe, secure and affordable.

What will happen at this meeting?

Organisations and groups that offer support or who campaign around renting issues will have stalls prior to event. It will be an opportunity to see how you can find out how to be referred for specialist housing advice or get involved with housing campaigns and actions.

The forum will start with some opening remarks from renters, organisers and from Manchester City Council.

Following this the focus of the event will be an opportunity to discuss your experiences of living in rented housing and collectively create solutions and policy demands. Topics will cover; poor conditions, affordability, insecurity/instability, NO DSS, barriers to renting, lack of rights, lack of representation and lobbying power.

At the event, we will also hear from Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester and Paul Dennett, Housing Lead for GMCA and Salford City Mayor who will be listening to renters.

Who is the Renters Forum for?

At present, this initial meeting of the Renters Forum is for residents of Manchester City Council. There are plans to host similar events for the other council authorities in Greater Manchester.

Those who do not rent their home but who are sympathetic to renting and housing are very welcome, but priority will be given to renters to ensure that those experiencing renting issues shape the discussions.

Venue

The Mechanics Institute is wheelchair accessible. If you have other accessibility questions around venue or the event please get in touch.

DISCLAIMER:

This event seeks to empower renters by giving them a voice, to enable them to have direct access and influence over housing policy in Manchester. Unfortunately there is not capacity to solve your current housing needs but you can be signposted and referred to support agencies present at the event via stalls.
