Manchester's Literary 1st Editions (Literature Month Guided Tour)
Tue 18 October 2016, 13:30 – 16:30 BST
The great libraries of Manchester will be dusting off their most priceless gems for our perusal.
Ed Glinert, Penguin author and editor of Penguin Classics’ Sherlock Holmes stories, will host this literary feast, an unmissable opportunity to gaze in awe at literary rarities and first editions, including (for we usually see) the manuscript of The Manchester Man, a volume from Henry VIII’s personal library, first editions of Elizabeth Gaskell’s works, an original and illustrated travels of Captain Cook in the South Seas, a very early banned Ulysses and other priceless treasures from the rare collections of three great Manchester libraries: the Portico, Chetham’s and Central. We will also stop into John Rylands Library to see the most valuable artefact in Manchester.
