Event description

Description

Manga is a term that has proved elusive to define in English. What we consider to be manga in the UK is considerably broader than what is considered manga in Japan. This can be seen by the diverse range of styles on display in this exhibition. What is clear, however, is that the appetite for manga as a form of graphic story telling is growing year on year in the UK.

Manga is a major part of modern Japanese life, with manga dealing with a broad range of both light-hearted and serious topics. Indeed, manga can be found in the hands of commuters, in the textbooks of school students and in the libraries of all manner of people throughout Japan. The Manga Jiman competition, which the Embassy of Japan has been running since 2007, is an attempt to capture and celebrate that plurality, as interpreted by artists living in the UK.

Year on year we are blown away by the quality of the entries we receive, and in this exhibition we proudly present the winning entries to the 2017 edition of the competition.

Exhibition of winning manga short-stories on display now at the Embassy of Japan.
