In this half day Islamic illumination tester session, you will learn a brief history of Islamic illuminations and learn the basic techniques of this beautiful type of Islamic art. You will complete a small illumination with gouache gold, outline it with black ink and paint a background to take your new piece of work home.

This is a beginners workshop (suitable for ages 16+). Designs and supplies will be provided.

Please note that the workshop is FREE. As we only have a limited number of places we are charging a £10 deposit to reserve your place; those who attend the class will be refunded the £10 fee. Manifesting the Unseen has been able to provide this workshop for free thanks to a grant from the Arts Council and the generous supporters of our crowdfunding campaign.

About Esra Alhamal - Esra is a Saudi artist based in London, currently a PhD candidate studying interior architecture, researching Islamic patterns and their significance in design. She is the founder of the educational platform: Islamic Illumination. Over the past four years, she has studied Persian and Turkish illumination with various artists, in addition to completing a series of intensive courses with the Art of Islamic Pattern and the Prince's School of Traditional Arts. She is learning the traditional methods, but experimenting with different styles and compositions to find her own voice within this beautiful art. In addition to her artwork, Esra is a popular art and travel blogger, creating content to share her journey into the world of Islamic pattern to help inspire others to do the same. Esra's work has been exhibited in Saudi, Oman, Bahrain as part of the Loud Art Collaborative Exhibition. She has also contributed to the British art scene by participating in a collaborative show in London.
