Mansell's Ferry Crossing
Event Information
About this Event
Ferries were an important means of transport in the past and many existed along the Wye. Most have disappeared, including Mansell’s ferry which last operated for the public around 1900, with footpaths now the only evidence of the crossing points.
For this walk the ferry crossing will be recreated. We start at the attractive black and white half-timbered village hall dating back to the 1920s.
We pass the picturesque Holme Lacy Hotel, a dismantled railway, crossing fields to the former Mansell's ferry crossing point. We cross the river with support from the Hereford County Canoe Club (full safety equipment provided) and continue the walk into the pretty village of Fownhope for lunch at the New Inn (pay on the day) or make your own arrangements.
We continue the walk after lunch and walk back to Holme Lacy along the river and across the bridge.
Kindly organised by Phil Platt on behalf of Herefordshire Walking Festival.
