This one day course is for those who know the basics of reading a map but want to be more confident about navigating including reading the contour lines and working competently with a compass.
The day will be spent outdoors using a variety of scales of maps. There will be exercises to help you
- Judge distance accurately [e.g. by step-counting between given points.]
- Understand better how to interpret contour lines
- Use different navigational strategies and working out which to use when
- Understand the physical and navigational factors affecting the choice of a route e.g. height gain or loss
- Understand how a compass works and how and when to use a compass for accurate bearings
There will be a refresher of basics including the concept of setting a map, map symbols and map scale
A minimum of 3 people are required for this event to proceed. Fran will refund if it is postponed.
The activities to be undertaken include: learning how to relate features on maps and on the ground to each other, taking it in turns to read a map and follow an agreed route, learning how to judge distance both estimating and accurately and understand compasses and learning how to take bearings.
We will be on a mixture of tracks and off track terrain mainly in the open. We cover around 5 miles in the day in open countryside and woodland areas.
Please bring a packed lunch (these can be bought locally at the deli or the general store) and flask with hot drink in it and dress for a day on the hills..
Are there any age limits to taking part?
If you are under 18 years of age you need to have a responsible adult with you. This is not advised for children under 14 years of age.
How fit do I need to be?
You should be comfortable walking for a few hours; be able to cover around 3 miles on level ground in an hour.
What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?
A number 15 bus runs from Perth to Comrie. Reasonable service.
There is parking on School Road. Ask for the primary school and you will find it.
What should I bring ?
Ensure you have everything for a day on the hills. Comfortable walking trousers( no jeans); Hiking boots ; Waterproof jacket and trousers; Spare layer ( fleece or similar); Hat and gloves; Packed lunch; Water and hot drink; Speak to Fran if you have any queries about what to bring.
Carry everything in a rucsac with a waterproof liner inside it. Dry bags for keeping gear waterproofed are recommended.
What happens if the weather is bad?
In the event of bad weather Fran will carry a shelter that can be used if need be and the route will be amended to keep us out of the elements as much as possible.

Refunds, transfers and cancellations?
You can book for someone else - just drop an email to let me know that is what you have done. Great present for someone! If you are unwell or unable to attend and let me know with at least a weeks notice I will move you toanother date or refund if this is not practical. I need a minimum of 3 for the course to be viable so in the event of numbers being too low I will cancel and refund you booking if there is not a suitable alternative for you.
