About this event
This interactive 3-hour virtual training is designed for residential care staff who support disabled children and young people with diagnosed conditions such as autism, ADHD, or sensory processing disorder (SPD). These children often experience the world in ways that require thoughtful, sensory-informed care. Through engaging activities, case studies, and practical tools, participants will explore how to recognise and respond to sensory behaviours in ways that promote emotional regulation, safety, and wellbeing in residential settings. Who Should Attend:
- Residential care workers and managers
- Key workers and support staff in children’s homes
- Professionals supporting disabled children with sensory needs
- Staff working with children with EHCPs or diagnosed neurodevelopmental conditions
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Describe the 8 sensory systems and how they influence behaviour, regulation, and relationships in disabled children.
- Recognise signs of sensory-seeking, sensory-avoiding, and dysregulation in children with autism, ADHD, or SPD.
- Reflect on their own sensory preferences and how these impact their caregiving approach.
- Apply practical strategies to create sensory-supportive environments in children’s homes.
- Use a framework for understanding sensory regulation to inform care planning and team practice.
- Collaborate with colleagues to embed sensory awareness into daily routines and team culture.
