MAPPING: The Mind, Memory and Imagination

Recording Only - Watch immediately once booked until 17th December 2025

Taught by Lucy McGeown

Maps have come a long way in their history, but even the geographically accurate ones have always been subjective and open for adaptation, so it is no wonder that artists have constantly come back to maps and map-making for inspiration!

In this class we will be playing around with what categorises a map, how we can create all types of maps that relate, meaningfully to things, that historically may not have qualified or been considered worthy of mapping - like the unusual terrain of our own memory and imagination.

These are maps that represent journeys and experiences but not with a geographical foundation, they appropriate the map's image or association to journey, location, entity or place but uncover other records of information, emotion and association to memory.

Lucy will be giving a short introduction to a selection of artists that work within this field of ‘alternative map-making’ at the beginning of the lesson, followed by a series of drawing and writing exercises.

These exercises will lead you on a journey through your own personal memory of a previous day and by translating this information through a variety of visual models, we will develop something entirely unique and representative of your own experience, thoughts and creative world surrounding those memories - an alternative map of your mind!

ARE YOU TRYING TO BOOK VIA THE EVENTBRITE PHONE APP?!

We have been in touch with Eventbrite, and they have informed us that currently you cannot book tickets to online events in their app. It's very frustrating and we have been assured they are working on a solution. In the meantime, we recommend that you book tickets to our events outside of the iOS app - either via a web browser or a desktop. If you book our classes regularly we recommend deleting the eventbrite App.
