Event description
Introduction to the oud and Arabic music

About this Event

Taqasim Foundation, London, and the Woolf Institute, Cambridge, present:

In collaboration with Mr Ahmed Mukhtar (Taqasim Foundation), the acclaimed Iraqi our virtuoso and composer, the Woolf Institute invites you to join the first workshop of our series Al-Maqam for an afternoon of basic oud instruction and an introduction to Middle Eastern music and history. The programme will address Arabic music history and theory, the role of Arabic music in Middle Eastern religious practices, and famous artists form the region who contributed to the development of Arabic religious and secular genres.

The workshops will be led by Mr Ahmed Mukhtar, interspersed with brief talks by Woolf Institute researchers. Following the workshop, Mr Mukhtar will be joined by Taqasim Ensemble for a riveting performance of authentic Arabic music. To join our first workshop on Monday 25 Nov, please register using the link below. This collaborative series is part of the Woolf Institute’s Living in Harmony project, which is exploring diasporic faith communities from the Middle East through music and encounter.

Tickets: free entry for workshop. £5.00 for recital.
