During this workshop you'll create unique swirling patterns with brightly coloured marbling inks on a variety of papers and cards. These will act as a cover for a hand bound book, we'll be using Japanese stab binding techniques to create books with a variety of decorative stitching. You will leave the workshop with at least one book.
This workshop costs £15 per person.
The workshop will take place at The Classroom Poole, a fantastic space in Parkstone.
Paper marbling is a really exciting technique with roots that go all the way back to 12th Century Persia and Turkey. It's been seen throughout history across East Asia moving across to Central Asia and Europe over hundreds of years, it's often been found in book binding and as a background for calligraphy. Colourings and materials used have changed over the years, from using ox gall, moss, acids and turpentine to more readily available and less toxic materials, but still has that distinct swirled effect.
It's unpredictable, you pick your colours and swirl them around and every time it will look completely different, creating a unique monotype print, but every time it will be bright and exciting.
Japanese stab book binding is a traditional book binding technique that is really adaptable to create your own unique books with an artistic binding. Unlike a lot of book binding styles that take a few days to glue and dry, this one can be completed with stitching, meaning you can make a lot of them in one go! You can create your own patterns for the edging and along with marbled card it can look really stunning! They make great gifts or just lovely books to write in yourself.
