Event description

Description

Join us for a panel discussion to mark the launch of Margaret Harkness: Writing Social Engagement 1880–1921, edited by Flore Janssen and Lisa C. Robertson (Manchester University Press 2019).

We are delighted to welcome speakers Professor David Glover (Southampton) and Dr Terry Elkiss (Michigan State), Harkness specialists and contributors to the volume, and respondent Dr Matthew Ingleby (QMUL), an expert on Bloomsbury.

The event will follow Dr Amara Thornton’s walking tour of Harkness’s Bloomsbury, and papers will speak to the content of the tour. Although often characterised as a London writer, Harkness travelled internationally and her work reflects a strong awareness of global politics and international literature.

The discussion will be followed by a reception, generously supported by the Literary London Society.

An offer to order the volume at a discount will be available to attendees of the event.

The organisers would like to thank the Literary London Society, Birkbeck College, and the Birkbeck Centre for Nineteenth-Century Studies for supporting this event.

Please note: This event will take place on Birkbeck College’s Bloomsbury Campus. The precise location will be confirmed as soon as possible.
