MARGINALIA: DRAWING MEDIEVAL DOODLES
Led by Luisa-Maria Maccormack, this class will be a playful exploration of the strange and wonderful world of medieval marginalia. In the illuminated manuscripts of the Middle Ages, monks and scribes filled the margins of sacred texts with doodles, jokes, and fantastical imagery—everything from sword-fighting snails and grinning cats to hybrid beasts and curious human figures. These whimsical drawings reveal the humour, imagination, and everyday lives of the people who created them.
In this session, we’ll dive into these bizarre and brilliant doodles as inspiration for our own drawing practice. Students will be guided through exercises in re-creating some of the most famous marginal figures before developing their own imaginative hybrids, monsters, and playful characters in the medieval spirit.
This class will be an opportunity to embrace the lighter side of art history while experimenting with line, pattern, and storytelling through drawing. Perfect for beginners and more experienced artists alike, it will encourage you to loosen up, laugh, and find inspiration in the margins.
Materials:
- Paper
- Pencils or pens
- Coloured media (optional: coloured pencils, watercolour or gouache!)
