Event description
Join us to hear from one of the world's most innovative economists, Mariana Mazzucato, in conversation with Rana Foroohar.

About this Event

Even before the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, capitalism was stuck. It had no answers to a host of problems, including disease, inequality, the digital divide and, perhaps most blatantly, the environmental crisis. Taking her inspiration from the 'moonshot' programmes which successfully co-ordinated public and private sectors on a massive scale, leading economist Mariana Mazzucato calls for the same level of boldness and experimentation to be applied to the biggest problems of our time.

In Mission Economy: A Moonshot Guide to Changing Capitalism, she explains how the moon landings offer a blueprint for radical and innovative solutions to the urgent economic and social problems we now face. She calls for a dramatic rethink of the role and capabilities of government, and sets out a bold new direction for an ambitiously solutions-based economy.

Join us for a compelling and timely conversation, chaired by award-winning Financial Times columnist Rana Foroohar.

Mariana Mazzucato is one of the world's most exciting and original economists - author of previous books The Entrepreneurial State and The Value of Everything. She is Professor in the Economics of Innovation and Public Value at University College London, where she is Founding Director of the UCL Institute for Innovation & Public Purpose. She was named as one of the '3 most important thinkers about innovation' by the New Republic and one of the 25 leaders shaping the future of capitalism by Wired.

Rana Foroohar is global business columnist and associate editor for the Financial Times, and CNN’s global economic analyst. Her first book, Makers and Takers, was shortlisted for the Financial Times and McKinsey Business Book of the Year in 2016. Her second, Don’t Be Evil: the Case against Big Tech, was published in 2019 and was a Sunday Times Business Book of the Year.
