Event description

Description

Join our resident author and creative writing tutor Alyson Faye for a fascinating presentation and workshop on Marilyn Monroe.

Today Marilyn (1926 - 1962) is an icon - the celebrated blond movie star of the 1950s who shone in Billy Wilder's comedies "Some Like it Hot" and "The Seven Year Itch". She came from humble beginnings, with a troubled childhood spent in foster care, but went on to create her own image and tutored herself in acting. She married the most famous baseball player in the world (Joe DiMaggio) and one of the US's greatest playwrights (Arthur Miller). She launched her own film production company in the 1950s, which was ground-breaking for an actress at that time. She wrote poetry, was friends with philosophers and authors, and co-created hundreds of stylish magazine covers, collaborating with photographers such as Cecil Beaton. Her image became influential in modern popular culture. She died at the age of 36, in the midst of filming.

In this 2-hour presentation and workshop Alyson will share clips from Marilyn's films, consider leading biographies and other source material, read excerpts from her poetry and discuss and examine her roles as muse, producer, wife and star, considering how she was regarded by her contemporaries and looking at the circumstances of her death.

There will be a bibliography and information pack to take away with you at the end of this informative session.

This is a great workshop for people who enjoy films, history and creative writing.

Cost: £25 per person. Complimentary tea, coffee and biscuits provided.
