Event description

Description

Help the Capturing our Coast team track alien invasions taking place on your local shores!

For centuries, marine species have moved around the globe either by hitching ride on the hulls of ships, as stowaways in ballast water, or by being deliberately introduced for commercial purposes. Some can have a positive effect and become a new food source for native species. Others thrive a bit too well and can become pests; these are called invasive species. Mapping the invasive species around our coastline can help us understand how they are affecting the marine environment!

Marine Invaders is open to the public of all ages, and no special training is required. You can either join us at one of our events or survey your local beach, simply visit www.mba.ac.uk/marineinvaders, and choose which habitat you wish to visit- sandy beach, rocky shore or ports and estuaries- and a species to search for! An identification card will be available to download, print and take to the shore to help with the hunt!
