Maritime Mental Health Awareness: Suicide Prevention - 27 January 2022

For those who have completed Modules 1 and 2 of ISWAN's Maritime Mental Health Awareness training, Module 3: Suicide Prevention provides a more advanced level of training to provide a greater understanding of suicide awareness, risk and prevention.

This live, interactive module builds on the Psychological First Aid model introduced in Module 2, and addresses common myths and stigmas about suicide. The training includes guidance on risk assessment, safety planning, and avenues of support; with an opportunity to practice essential skills.

Aims

Through a mix of discussions, presentations, and practical activities, this module aims to:

• Raise awareness of suicide, address myths and learn about fact
• Increase understanding of risk and protective factors in seafarer suicide
• Develop awareness and vigilance for warning signs
• Build confidence in knowing when and how to act
• Learn skills in how to manage risk and establish safety whilst at sea
• Highlight the importance of self care

Why is our training different?

This training is designed specifically to build awareness of mental health in a maritime environment. It adapts best practice for mental health awareness, early recognition, and initial responses for senior officers and shoreside staff.

Offered by ISWAN, this training is designed by Consultant Clinical Psychologist Dr Pennie Blackburn, author of the ISWAN Good Mental Health Guides. Grounded in evidence and best practice in the field of mental health, this course draws on the extensive experience of ISWAN and SeafarerHelp around the issues affecting seafarers and the challenges of supporting people at sea.

Cost

The course costs £200 per participant (plus Eventbrite fees) and includes a detailed Participant’s Manual and Certificate of Attendance. ISWAN members can book onto the course at a discounted rate of £175.

All profits from this training will go directly towards the operating costs of ISWAN’s charitable services.
